Impacts of land pollution

A large percentage of material that is dumped into waters not only destroys habitats for animals but for humans as well. Below is a list of some impacts of land pollution :

  • There are some habitats, where aquatic animals feed and live, so there is a risk of destruction of habitat of aquatic animals.
  • Reduced oxygen levels from decomposition of organic material dumped from drains.
  • Reduced light penetration in the water column, from sediments and excessive algal growth, leading to oxygen depleted water. *Massively changed flow regimes, large fast flows can scour existing habitat and wash species downstream.
  • Increased human health risks, from syringes, broken glass and cans washing onto creek banks and beaches.
  • Reduced aesthetic appeal of areas from litter strewn on banks and beaches, thus reducing recreation and tourist appeal.
  • Acid rain damages trees and other plants.

Ways to reduce land pollution

Here are some ways to reduce land pollution
•encourage organic farming
•proper garbage disposal
•recycle garbage
•reduce use of herbicides and pesticides
•Avoid overpackaged items
•efficient utilization of resources and reducing wastage

Effects Of Land Pollution

Here are some of the effects of land pollution
•exterminates wild life
•acid rain kills trees and other plants.
•vegetation that provides food and shelter is destroyed.
•it can seriously disrupt the balance of nature, and, in extreme cases, can cause human fatalities.
•pesticides can damage crops; kill vegetation; and poison birds, animals, and fish. Most pesticides kill or damage life forms other than those intended. For example, pesticides used in an effort to control or destroy undesirable vegetation and insects often destroy birds and small animals. Some life forms develop immunity to pesticides used to destroy them.

Causes Of Land Pollution

1.One of the causes of land pollution is increase in urbanization as construction uses up forestland. More constructions leads to the increase in demand for raw materials for example timber which will lead to the exploitation and destruction of forests. As a result, there is an increase in demand for water. To solve this problem, reservoirs are built leading to loss of land.
2.Another is the increase in agricultural land. When the human population grows, there will be a greater demand for food. This will cause more land to be allocated to agriculture. As there are limited area on earth, forests are cut down to provide spaces.
3.Another is the domestic watse as every day, tons of watse are dumped. If these watse are not disposed properly, the damage it causes to the environment and the humankind can be devastating. Waste form homes, offices and industries can be either recycled or burnt in incinerators, but a large amount of watse can neither be burnt nor recycled and often are left in areas known as dumping grounds. As people dumped more things nowadays, there is an increase in the amount of solid watse. As a result, more dumping grounds have been found to consolidate all of this waste which leads to land pollution.
4.Another is the agricultural activities. When farmers use pesticides and herbicides to increase crop yields, it also pollutes the land as they are washed into the soil.
5.Lastly is the industrial activities. It is also a factor as for e.g, in open cast mining, huge holes are dug in the ground and these form dangerously deep mining pools. Heaps of mining watse are left behind and these waste are left behind, which often contain several poisnous substances that will contaminate the soil.
*Pollution sources includes plastic factories, chemical plants, oil refineries, nuclear waste disposal activity, large animal farms, coal-fired power plants, metals production factories and other heavy industry.

What exactly is land pollution?

Land pollution is the degradation of Earth's land surfaces which is often caused by human activities and their misuse of land resources. It occurs when waste is not disposed properly. A few factors are haphazard disposal of urban and industrial wastes, exploitation of minerals, and improper use of soil by inadequate agricultural practices. Urbanization and industrialization are major causes of land pollution. The Industrial Revolution set a series of events into motion which destroyed natural habitats and polluted the environment, causing diseases in both humans and other species of animals.
